Karla's Story

It all started in the afternoon of March 15th. I was napping in my sons room and the phone rang at 12:00 noon. It was my daughter's school saying she wasn't feeling well and I told them to keep her at school. Normally, I would have gone and gotten her, but for some reason, I just automatically said, "No". I then went to put the dishes away in the kitchen and I started feeling dizzy, so I went to lay on the couch. I grabbed the phone and called my Mom and left a message telling her to call me. I've had this dizzy feeling before, but not to this extent.

Then I went to lay on my bed at the back of the house. My three year old son following me the whole way. I laid on my bed and knew something was really wrong, so I called my husband at work. I couldn't remember his cell phone number, so I called the main line and talked to the secretary and she got him for me. I told him to come home immediately!

I then realized that I had lost control of my bladder, so I thought I better get to the bathroom. I got there somehow. I sat on down, somehow getting my underpants off, then proceeded to loose conciousness.

When I was getting ready to sit on the toilet, I realized I had also lost control of my bowels. All of that without realizing it! I'm only adding this, because I had no idea what was going on.

After waking up, sitting on the toilet, I laid down on the floor, by the corner of my bed and put my head on the comforter that was pooled on the floor. I could feel my entire body sweating, including my toes! My breathing was very shallow, it felt like lamaze! I must have lost consciousness again, because next I remember my son standing there, telling me to get some pants on. I was in a shirt and socks. Trust me, I don't normally lay around like THAT! The rang and it was my Mother. My son picked up the phone and she was screaming my name, which must have gotten me aroused somewhat.

After getting off the phone with my Mother, I called a friend who lives near by to come get my son. My husband walked in and saw the whole scene and tried to clean me up and get a pair of underwear on me and I almost passed out again! There was no way he was taking me to the hospital-he called 911. The paramedics were surprised I was awake. They couldn't get a blood pressure or a pulse.

It was a very dire situation. They couldn't get the gurney into my room (weird angles), so they had to carry me out on a white quilt I had in my room. They tried, unsuccessfully, five times to get an IV in. My veins just weren't there for them. When I got to the ER, the doctors were asking me if there was a possibility I was pregnant. I said, "No". I had been to the OB/GYN just weeks earlier and came through fine. I had a period just a couple of weeks before that. They tried to do an x-ray, but I passed out and had a seizure. So, they did an intravaginal ultrasound (not a fun thing!), and found I was indeed pregnant and it was tubal. The tube had ruptured, and I had ruptured an artery and was bleeding internally. They took me up to surgery right away. I had a wonderful surgeon who was both very qualified and caring. Lucky me! This wasn't my regular hospital, so I was very lucky!

When I got back to my room, I found I had lost my left ovary and tube. The ovary had become entangled in the tube and was destroyed. I wound up having to have a transfusion because my hemoglobin wasn't rising to where it should have been. I was in the hospital for six days, I couldn't wait to get out, but now I wish I was there, just for the sleep!
