Jamie's Story
My husband and I waited three years to have our first baby, which I was am so happy to say was the easiest pregnancy and delivery I had ever heard of. She was born on April 26th, 1997. The only complication was that she was three weeks early. After such a wonderful experience, I couldn't wait to have a second child. When my daughter was 2 1/2 years old I found out I was pregnant and my due date was July 16, 2000. Everyone around me was pregnant and almost everyone was having a boy. So, in February when I had my ultrasound and found out I was having a boy I was so excited. My husband was going to finally have his son. Unfortunately, I lost that child due to a severe case of hydrocephalus. I was almost five months pregnant when that pregnancy ended. I was devastated. I lost the son I had longed for.
I followed my doctors advice and waited four full months to conceive. So, much to my delight, in July of 2000 I found out I was pregnant again. I was so excited, but scared at the same time. I didn't want to go through that same ordeal. Exactly one week after I discovered I was pregnant, I started bleeding. Not just spotting, but heavy bleeding, with clots. I soaked pad after pad after pad. I called the doctor on call and I was told I was miscarrying and should see my doctor first thing in the morning. Well, as luck would have it (or bad luck) I had just switched insurance company's due to a change within my company and I had to go to my primary care physician before I could see an OB/GYN.
My family practitioner had told me I was probably miscarrying and did not need to see an OB. She sent me home after a blood test. I was asked to come back two days later for a second blood test. She called me after the two tests and asked if I had any pains. I had no pains at all. Just bleeding. This all happened on July 16 and 19. On August 1, I went back to the doctor because my bleeding hadn't stopped. She still would not send me to an OB, but did another blood test. After those results came in (a week after I did the test, because they couldn't find my results) she called me again and said something was wrong. I'm not a doctor and I tried to tell her that. I had bled for three weeks with sporadic heavy bleeding and blood clots. I felt as though I hadn't been taken seriously. FINALLY, on August 9, I was referred to an OB. She called me immediately. She stated that I needed to be seen ASAP. She made an appointment for me to have an ultrasound and asked me to come in the next day. The ultrasound showed absolutely nothing in my uterus. So, my OB said I had her completely baffled until the ultrasound and fourth blood test.
She determined I had an ectopic pregnancy. She couldn't figure out why I didn't have any pains. The only pains I had felt were some lower back pains. That same day she gave me a shot of methotrexate. She said I was a perfect candidate for this method. I was to have two more blood tests, I've had one already. This OB has been so wonderful with all her concern for my health and well being, which is more than I can say for the family practitioner that wouldn't take me seriously. TRUST ME, I'M SWITCHING MY FAMILY PRACTITIONER. In a few more days I should find out the status of this "pregnancy" and my health. My husband wants to give up and not try again after these last two experiences. I don't know what I want to do. I thank God I have the OB I do. She has been nothing less that terrific and I would recommend her to anyone and everyone in the future. I only wish the bleeding would stop. On August 16, it will be exactly one month that I've been bleeding. It's getting very very old.
Thanks for hearing my story. With a little luck and some prayer I hope to have a healthy pregnancy someday.
